Jonry and Emily at The Park

For Emily and Jonry

A word on brunch.

My brother warned me about weekend brunch in the city: Its a big deal and everyone does it. When Saturday hit, it was like we slid right into the lazy casual routine of waking up never before ten and ordering poached eggs and Stumptown by one.

When you spend Monday to Friday in long hours and rush hour, the weekend is your escape. And no one does weekend brunch better than New York.

But one thing, WHERE THE HOLLANDAISE!?

I missed the flight home!?

Somewhere mid-trip I lost access to Tumblr - apologies for the discontinued blog of my tales of New York City. Here I complete a story.

Since I last wrote, the weather in NYC was fine and divine, shopping was had and food was most definitely being eaten. I’d visited the Museum of Modern Art, Central Park, and Chelsea High Line, and whatever fabulous sites the city has to offer. But my greatest tales come secretly, like deep in a back alley behind Freeman’s Barbershop and Men’s Sporting Goods, or in a park off side in Brooklyn watching kites fly and forgetting about time (and ironically reading about time).

Its withdrawal season now, and oh how I miss New York.

30 seconds in Brooklyn.

The weather this afternoon was absolutely gorgeous; tonight there’s a few thunderstorms and heavy rain.

I played this while we were making dinner this evening. Apparently Beirut is Johnry’s (our host) favourite band!

Weekends in Brooklyn

Its 1PM in New York and I’m sitting on a back porch in South Brooklyn, this netbook on the cutest pink floral tablecloth with sun beaming behind me. The weather is gorgeous, perfect - my first day in shorts this year. It smells like Chanel nail polish from Briana beside me and cool summer with a slight breeze from the ocean about five blocks away. Emily senior is working across the table from me, and Mrs. Ko is sitting on the steps with a cup of hot water. Bedford is chilling within his leashes distance nearby, probably waiting for some birds to chase. Everyone is out, including the neighbours’ kids along the row houses on the block. Weekends in Brooklyn. Oh, and of course, Coffee Soda on ice.

Walking City

We did a lot of walking today, through Chinatown, Nolita, the Lower Eastside, the Village, a little detour in Brooklyn, and the Financial District while doing a lot of walking within itself at Century 21. Today was our first full day in New York. We spent most of our time getting down our bearings and exploring what we liked and didn’t like. You betcha we’ll be back tomorrow and tomorrow-after (can you believe its only Day 2?).

Next up, Williamsburg. My brother told me before I left and Emily senior recommomended it again this evening: Egg Restaurant. This will be Sunday brunch! Come back tomorrow for my review on duck hash and maybe a peepshow of our shoot from somewhere in Brooklyn.

Happy Easter as well! Though Emily senior says we probably won’t see much celebration on that tomorrow because “Hipsters don’t believe in God.”

What Phillip Taught Me on the Plane

I didn’t meet a boy on the plane, though that would have been cute, no?

It was a five hour flight, give or take a few minutes, from Vancouver to New York JFK. A red eye, I still couldn’t help myself from watching at least one movie from the in-flight entertainment selection; this flight I chose Jack Goes Boating.

A man past his prime, Jack meets a woman while living in New York City. After making a date in the summer to take Connie on a boat, he confesses to his best friend that he cannot swim. For Connie, Jack spends the next months learning how to swim. In his first lesson Jack closes his eyes and visualizes being under water.

After the movie ended I blacked the screen and drifted off to a dream, thinking of the story of Jack in New York City, and then me in New York City.
